The value of traceability in LabVIEW projects

Our projects are solid because they manage data effectively. We use formats such as TDMS and SQL databases to ensure consistency, accessibility and interoperability. Contact us for a free consultation!

Building solid software solutions with effective data management

We base our solutions on solid data management

When we develop software solutions in LabVIEW, on desktop PCs or CompactRIO systems, the first pillar we build is not made of complex algorithms or attractive interfaces. It is made of data.

At MET we believe that solid data storage and traceability are the bedrock of any project that must be robust, scalable and maintainable over time. That is why each of our projects starts from a data infrastructure designed to last.

TDMS format: consistency and accessibility

We use the National Instruments TDMS format, which is fully integrated with LabVIEW and also suited to fast data streams on both PC and CompactRIO. This format ensures:

  • Structural consistency of the collected data
  • Easy indexing and searching
  • Compatibility with tools such as:
    • our Galileo Data Viewer, developed in-house
    • NI DIAdem
    • or environments such as Python or MATLAB, if the customer requires them

SQL database: sustainability and interoperability

Alongside TDMS we use a MariaDB database, an open-source, zero-cost SQL solution, typically installed on the customer’s server to ensure maximum security and controlled access to the data.

This infrastructure provides:

  • High reliability and maintainability
  • Data queries from both LabVIEW and Office tools (such as Excel or Access), which in this context become a sustainable solution
  • Integration with tools the customer already uses, such as a MES (Manufacturing Execution System), for smooth management across R&D tests, EOL (End of Line) tests and business systems

We have developed lightweight libraries for managing SQL databases on any CompactRIO, both legacy and modern.

We hold the “SQL for Data Science” certification from UC Davis. The certification path led us to look deeper into SQL and to choose it as an affordable, well-known and reliable solution to integrate into our software projects.

Why does all this matter?

Because reliable, traceable and accessible data allows the customer to:

  • Validate results
  • Have reliable audit trails
  • Integrate tests into their production and decision-making flow
